The festival actually begins on the eve of the lunar New Year's Day and ends on the fifth day of the first month of the lunar calendar. But the 15th of the first month, which normally is called the Lantern Festival, means the official end of the Spring Festival.

Before Spring Festival, people are busy shopping . They buy vegetables, fish, meat and new clothes and many other things.
And they usually clean and decorate their houses. Usually, people will paste scrolls and paper-cut for window decoration.
People usually have big feast all family members together, and stay up late or all night on New year’ s Eve, which means hope for the next year. And when at 12, they set off firecrackers joyfully.
On the new year’s day, people will eat dumplings, which means earn more in the new year.
The most excited moment for children is getting red envelops from their parents and relatives.
Paying a new year’ s call on their relatives and friends.

During the spring festival, people will have different food at different time:
At New Year’ s Eve, all the family members will come back home, and all the families will have a big feast. There are all kind of meat on the dining-table, and the fish is a must, which means “Every year has surplus.” And sometimes we even put up the tail of fish on the wall. And before we have meal, we should set off firecrackers.
On the New Year’ s morning, we often eat dumplings and eggs, which means earn more money in the next year. On this day, people should say blessing to each other, and can’ t say something auspicious words. And before the first meal of a new year, we also shoot off firecrackers first. After the first meal, we often pay a New Year call on our relatives, especially our parents; or we’ll visit the graves of dead.
The 15th day of the first month of the lunar calendar remarks the end of the New year’s Day. On this day, we don’ t have firecrackers, but lanterns. Many families hang lantern at the door, and some even light candles on their balcony.
