Why People Work
Introduction
Work is a part of people’s life.
Work is of great importance to people.
People work for different reasons.
Reasons to work:
1. Work fulfills people’s material needs.
For most people in the world, work is necessary in order to survive and it is a means of earning a living.
People work to meet their financial obligations: feed, clothe and quarter themselves and their families.
With money people can be financially independent, and have some control over their life.
People earn more money to improve their living standard and enjoy a better life.
2. Work satisfies people’s psychological needs and is a significant source of human satisfaction.
Many people need work in order to feel that their lives are meaningful and valuable and that they are contributing to society.
Work gives people a social life—they belong to a team and interact regularly with different people.
Work makes people feel good about themselves—they can see themselves gaining experience, expertise, status and acknowledgement by their colleagues and superiors.
Work gives people a sense of personal achievement by presenting them with new challenges, helping them grow and be creative.
Even if people do not like their work, it’s still important. The dullest work is less painful than idleness.
Without work, people feel bored, empty, aimless and worthless.
For large numbers of people, the absence of work is harmful to their health.
3. Our way of life depends on people’s work, so to some degree, to work is people’s social responsibility.
What would happen if no one worked? How would we all survive? The goods and services we need to live and enjoy in our leisure time simply couldn’t exist.
For example, if you needed to catch a bus: Who would design and construct the bus? Who would supply the petrol for the bus? Who would drive the bus?
If you wanted to read a newspaper: Who would write the articles and take the pictures for it? Who would make the paper to print it on? Who would print it? Who would distribute it, and how?
Conclusion
People work for survival, for entertainment, for development and for responsibility.
Although earning a living is a very important reason to work, and is probably the most common one, it is not the only reason. People may work for all kinds of reasons, including those described above or a combination of them. Whatever people work for, they want to enjoy and help others enjoy a better life.
Maslow's hierarchy of needs
Why People Work
The reason why most people work is to gain money and to lead a comfortable life, except for those who have inherited a large sum of money. Nowadays people work harder and more efficiently, for they need to consume more. Money is the main motivation in most workplaces.
People also work out of interest and pleasure. For instance, singers enjoy the moment he or she is absorbed in music or a salesman gets excited when a customer is persuaded into buying his goods. Having got a task completed or been promoted, a worker would have a
sense of achievement. This kind of self-fulfillment adds pleasure to people’s life and push them forward in their work.
It is a terrific thing to combine enjoying work with earning salary. If it is not the case, we should also try to find pleasure in work, improve our ability and find our true interest, biding time for a better job.
Why People Work
On weekdays, we’ll see different people go to different places in a hurry. They’re going to work. Must we work? Yes, of course. We need a job to make a living. We need money for ourselves and our families, so we have to go to work. That’s why people work.
But in my opinion, the answer is not so simple. Apart from money, we can get many other things. First, we can improve ourselves, make us more capable and contribute to the development of society. Second, we need work to color our life. Staying in bed all day will
make most people crazy. Thanks to work, it makes weekends and family get-together more precious. Finally we can get contentment of spirit through working. We need work to show our ability and realize our dreams. without work, the history of human beings will come to an end.
So people must work, not only for money, but also for spiritual needs. Get ready for your own work.
